Before the coming of Europeans, the Coosaw and Yemassee tribes inhabited the area but soon migrated after the Yemassee Uprising of 1712.

An agriculturally based economy (mostly rice farming), brought prosperity in the early to mid-1800s.

Like many southeastern towns, Ridgeland owes its start to the coming of the railroad. Originally named Gopher Hill, it became Ridgeland in 1902 when the railroad built a new depot a mile from the original station.

Jasper County was formed in 1912 and Ridgeland was picked as the seat.
